I went climbing with some friends and decided to use the trip as an opportunity to explore notions of stability, looking at the balance and skills of climbing. I looked at the hands of people climbing, and the strain exerted on them
From the photos I took I selected what I saw as the best few, and edited them accordingly, brightening them and sharpening the focus on the hands and fingers, and the grips on the "rocks". Looking back upon the photos I saw notions of landscapes in the climbing walls, not just in the walls themselves, but in the shapes and grips on them, and each one resembled its own kind of landscape, leading me to explore that as a further concept.
Out of a series of continuous shots, I created a short video of a friend attempting a difficult move, involving a swing from one perch to another. I saw this as a key opportunity to experiment with stability and balance. I looped the clip as a way of emphasising the instability, showing a sort of back and forth between the climb, with the subject seeming indecisive in a way, as if they saw what could happen, and had to make a judgement.
