There's a pretty big divide between genders when it comes to uptake into art. The divide is roughly a 75% girls to 25% boys, a clear imbalance. There was a discussion in class on the reasons why this is, and why the boys in the group decided to do the subject, whether it's down to family support, or how they grew up, or just because it appeals to them in some way. We were then tasked with producing a minute long video covering the topic, to put into perspective why we thought the divide exists.
The main theme behind this video was the idea that values of stereotypical masculinity and avoiding emotional expression can be ‘force-fed’ into individuals, almost as if its being indoctrinated into them. The main influence for recreating this was a scene from Stanley Kubrick's “A Clockwork Orange”, specifically the rehabilitation scene, where the main character is subjected to violent videos and psychedelic drugs to "rehabilitate" him. We edited a video together made up of clips from many forms of media that enforce stereotypes about boys and what is considered "masculine". We then used a projector to project it onto a wall in front of a model, to look like he is being forced to watch the video. Adding to this, we projected the video over his face, to mix his facial expressions with the video.

I've included this work because it relates to the thoughts around boys in art and why there are so few, or why the few choose to participate in the subject, and finding their place in a subject that it seems they are deterred from.
